Hello, Centennial students! September brought us many news and activities to share with you, and most importantly, it helped us learn more about you! Here’s a quick recap of what we did this month:
Special General Meeting
Our first SGM as a full board was better than we all could have expected! We decided to change some bylaws and make a few updates with the help of CCSAI’s research and advocacy specialists to serve our Centennial community in better ways! We thank the students who could not make it but assigned us as their proxies and those who attended virtually and in person. We can’t wait to see your faces again in the upcoming projects. Here’s an overview of what changed regarding election policies:
- Students will now be required to have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA to apply for board positions.
- The president and the vice presidents can now serve the association for up to two years, but conditions apply.
- First-semester students are now eligible to apply for board positions as long as their first semester GPA is 3.0 or above.
You can now check our schedule and register to attend our upcoming Board meetings.
Advising Council
As board members representing a large body of students, we found that although we come from diverse backgrounds, six of us might not be able to reflect or represent the diverse community at Centennial. For that, we decided to hire an Advising Council, a body of students that will listen to other students’ needs and communicate them to us, serving as a bridge between governance and the student body.
Our council has already been selected, and we’ll come with more news soon!
Leadership at its peak!
This month, we attended a session from Leaders for Leaders, an organization dedicated to building teams and developing leadership skills in many. We explored how our actions, backgrounds, and biases influence our behaviour as leaders, and that is the first step to understanding how we can better work as a team and serve students at the college.
Scarborough RT Closure letter to TTC
We wrote a letter to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) about how the closure of line 3 affects the entire community. We urged the TTC to look into the matter and keep Scarborough moving! Click here to read the letter and learn more about our asks.
Festivals, and more Festivals!
Since not everything is about approving policies and learning how to govern a non-profit, some of us gave ourselves the luxury to join you for some fun times. Our Fall Fest tours went around all campuses for some fun games and prizes. And even better: our yearly Carnival party was a success! There, we listened to good music all night, danced, ate good food and celebrated being together.
Let’s Go Blue Jays!
We attended the College and University Night Toronto Blue Jays vs Texas Rangers game at the Rogers Centre! Although our home team lost, everyone’s energy and enthusiasm kept the team going. ⚾
